On August 23, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM CT, ASL interpreters are invited to attend “Sacred Signs: Understanding Janazah & Muslim Traditions for ASL Interpreters”, a specialized in-person workshop designed to enhance cultural and linguistic skills for interpreting Islamic funeral and end-of-life contexts. Exclusively free for Greater Minnesota residents (and $20 for Minnesota Metro interpreters), the session will be led by presenters Asma Abdille and Valerie Shirley. Participants will learn culturally appropriate ASL vocabulary for key Islamic terms such as Janazah (funeral), ghusl (ritual washing), and du’a (prayer), along with their religious significance, ensuring respectful and accurate interpretation. The workshop includes practical, hands-on training, role-playing, and real-life scenarios to build confidence and cultural sensitivity when serving Deaf Muslim individuals and families during significant spiritual moments. Offering 0.2 PS credits, this session will be conducted entirely in ASL with no interpretation.
